Who is Neighbors United
Since its founding in 1974, Neighbors United has represented the needs of all of the residents of the Freret and Milan neighborhoods, property owners and renters alike. The Neighbors United area extends from Jefferson Ave. on the west to General Taylor St. on the east and from Claiborne Ave. on the North to Dryades St. on the South. Since Hurricane Katrina, and the damage inflicted by the storm on parts of the neighborhood, this task has taken on increased importance and urgency as we try to rebuild.
Our four-fold mission is:
- To improve the quality of life for all residents
- To improve the safety of the neighborhood for all residents
- To combat blight and litter throughout the area
- To promote the economic health of the neighborhood
Neighbors United holds general meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of every other month at Green Charter Middle School starting at 6:00 PM. Neighbors United also holds officers and committee meetings at various times through the year. All meetings are open to the public.
What has Neighbors United been doing recently?
Neighbors United has coordinated resources to assist dozens of area residents with housing repair in the past year alone. - Neighbors United has begun a Neighborhood Watch program and, in co-ordination with Oschner Hospital, is attempting to have a community policing center established within the neighborhood.
- Neighbors United has organized events, such as night out against crime and neighborhood clean-ups, to increase the well-being of all residents.
- Neighbors United has acted as an essential distributor of information about activities and resources that are available to residents of the Neighbors United area, as well as creating a forum for residents to address their elected officials.
- Neighbors United has promoted improvements within the neighborhood such as: better street lighting, street repair and cubing installation, park repairs, and landscaping and ensuring that those items have been addressed in the city recovery plan.
For the near future Neighbors United, in addition to continuing those projects and activities already begun, Neighbors United will be embarking on an ambitious, neighborhood wide, survey program beginning this September in conjuction with NHS and the Freret Community Center. The survey will be used to collect population, demographic, housing, and neighborhood perception data about all of the residents of the Freret and Milan areas.
