Neighborhood Planning
Since Hurricane Katrina, Neighbors United has been helping to plan for the recovery and revitalization of the Freret and Milan Neighborhoods. Neighbors United began planning in May of 2006 by holding a series of neighborhood meetings through July to get input and feedback from the community about what we wanted our neighborhood to be and how we wanted to get there. This list of ideas are illustrated on the attached Community and Infrastructure Plans. Neighbors United then took these projects and concerns and worked, through the Lambert and UNOP planning processes, to get them implemented into the Master Recovery Plan. This goal was achevied in early 2007 when the mayor and city council passed a resolution declaring the UNOP plan as the offical recovery plan for the city of New Orleans. In June of 2007 our planning efforts were rewarded by the Office of Recovery Management declaring the Freret corridor as one of the 17 recovery zones in New Orleans.
Since the end of the official planning processes Neighbors United has continued to work to fufill the goals laid out by the community for the neighborhood. Neighbors United is also working to complete a comprehensive recovery plan and neighborhood survey which will be posted upon completion.
