FRERET ARTS AND CULTURE OVERLAY APPROVED!
On October 18th, 2007, the Freret Arts and Culture Overlay was approved by the New Orleans City Council by a vote of 6 - 0. This passage represents the culmination of alot of hard work and energy by many people to create a zoning which will spur economic development on Freret Street while still respecting and protecting the people of the surrounding neighborhood. "Years from now people will look upon this as a landmark day in the neighborhood," said Andrew Amacker, Vice-President of Neighbors United, "a day when the commercial corridor of Freret Street received a major tool in its revival."
The Freret Arts and Culture Overlay will allow for theaters, green groceries, museums, and artist galleries on Freret Street between Jefferson and Napoleon. Also, this zoning change will ban pakaged liquor sales and prevent new establishments from being open 24 hours.
Neighbors United would like to thank the Freret Business and Property Owners Association for spearheading this effort. Neighbors United would also like to thank Councilperson Stacy Head and her staff for their hard work on our behalf to move this forward and the City Planning Commission for working with us to tailor the zoning document.
